Travel Diary: Washington

Washington, D.C : A city that has been keeping a humongous amount of heritage in a mere area of 68 square mile. One can cover the entire city in a day on foot tirelessly. Of course it excludes the time one spends with architecture, museums and art galleries, and trust me on this when I say that the excluded time is atleast 2 complete days. Six of the top 10 buildings in the American Institute of Architects’ 2007 ranking of “America’s Favorite Architecture” are in the District of Columbia: the White House; the Washington National Cathedral; the Thomas Jefferson Memorial; the United States Capitol; the Lincoln Memorial; and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. These structures are combination of the neoclassical, Georgian, gothic, and modern architectural styles.

The most visited museum in Washington is  National Museum of Natural History which covers sea habitants, plants, mammals and geographical evolution. Beautiful seashells, corals, T-rex skeletons, gems, rocks and wildlife portraits are on display.

Washington is a treat for art connoisseurs. The National Gallery of Art and its attacked sculpture garden has works of American and European art. The gallery has two building connected by an underground passage. The West Building has an exquisite collection of European paintings and sculptures and American artists. Highlights of the collection include many paintings by Claude Monet, Vincent van GoghLeonardo da VinciJan Vermeer and Rembrandt van Rijn.  The East Building focuses on modern and contemporary art, with a collection including works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. One can spend an entire day in this gallery and it will even not be sufficient to just go through the gallery.

The gallery has been sub-sectioned as per the periods as well as genres which makes the visit easily accessible even for an amateur. Although the museums have multiple scheduled guided tours, the audio-aided guide would have been a good step for more fruitful visit.

Some and those Others

Some days will be happier and some will be harder

Both will be worth, live to enjoy them.

Some friends will stay for longer and some will for shorter

Both will be worth, cherish to have them.

Some paths will be easier and some will be trickier

Both will be worth, learn from them.

Some smiles will be genuine and some will be courtesy

Both will be worth, smile back at them.

The only thing, your reaction will be of one course

Some and those others will have its own special purpose.

Four Leadership Tips from the White House — Discover

“As designers, it’s easy to get caught up in plans or in the details of a project and lose awareness of ourselves and our surroundings. It happened to me a lot at the White House.” Ashleigh Axios, former creative director at the White House, says that your work is only as good as you feel.
